From the album: Printing your model: from XY to Z
The hot end of the extruder (in red) is just as it sounds--it is the heated part of the extruder. To the right of the extruder is the z probe or z sensor (tip in orange). This is what allows for auto-leveling. The z probe senses the position of the print bed by inductive current produced by the aluminum in the table.© Beth Ripley 2015

From the album: Printing your model: from XY to Z
The negative z-value describes the distance the extruder tip should be from the print bed. This value needs to be optimized to ensure the best print. If the extruder is too far from the print bed, the model will be stringy. If the extruder is too close, it can smash the print. Therefore, it is worth the effort to get it just right. The negative z-value is set via g-code.© Beth Ripley 2015
