    3D Printing Brain Model with Stroke: STL Files Available for Download

    Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. In 2010, worldwide prevalence of stroke was 33 million, with 16.9 million people having a first stroke. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability.
     
    A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, and brain cells die.
     
     
    This 3D printable model of stroke contains three STL files for bioprinting. One STL file is for printing the cerebral arteries. There is a skull STL file and another file for printing the filling inside the skull which provides support for placing the vasculature in the proper position within the model. The files have been zipped to reduce file size. You will need to unzip the files once you have downloaded them.These files are distributed under the Creative Commons license Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs. Please respect the terms of the licensing agreement.
     
    The models are provided for distribution on embodi3D.com with the permission of the creators Dr. Beth Ripley and Dr. Tatiana.     Vertebral column (Dorsal, Lumbar & Sacral spine) - STL file from converted CT scan

    The dorsal (thoracic) spine forms the middle portion of the vertebral column extending below the seventh cervical vertebra to above the first lumbar vertebra. The dorsal spine is formed by twelve vertebral bodies.
    The vertebrae forming the dorsal spine are unique in shape as they are the only vertebral bodies articulating with ribs.
     
    The lumbar spine represents the mid-lower segment of the vertebral column and is composed of five adjacent vertebrae. They are convex anteriorly to form a lumbar lordosis. The lumbar spine facet joints allows limited movements and rotation.
     
    The sacrum is the lower most segment of the vertebral column and also forms the posterior wall of the bony pelvis. The sacrum is formed by five fused sacral vertebrae.
     
    This model shows the origin of ribs, few of the cervical spines and the sacroiliac joint. The minimal tilt seen is likely positional rather that pathological.

    Pelvic Bones 3D Printable STL File Converted From CT Scan

    The bony pelvis is formed by 4 bones; a pair of hip bones, the sacrum and the coccyx. The bony pelvis supports the pelvic viscera and works to transmit force from the axial skeleton to the lower limbs.   The two hip bones are related anteriorly at the symphysis pubis and posteriorly to the sacroiliac joint bilaterally. This particular 3D model shows some irregular material floating within the pelvic cavity which represents a contrast media in the colon, that contrast media is given for patients prior to CT scans to distinguish intestinal loops.   This 3D model was created from the file STS_044. This file was created from this CT scan.

    Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each year it is estimated that over 230,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. It is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women (lung cancer is the leading cause). Over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today. These STL files allow you to 3D print a whole breast with the mass within the breast and another model of just the mass.

    The knee joint is formed by three bones: the femur, the tibia and the patella. the knee joint is the largest synovial joint and provides the flexion and extension movements of the leg as well as relative medial and lateral rotations while in relative flexion.
    The knee joint articulations are two condylar joints between the femur and the tibia as well as a joint between the patella and the femur. Although the fibula is closely related to the knee joint but it doesn't share in articulation.   The knee joint is also formed by some ligaments and cartilage called (menisci) which are best imaged by MRI.   This 3D model was created from the file STS_045. The source CT scan used to create this model can be found here.

    Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Mild Coarctation STL Files for 3D Printing

    There are four STL files for 3D printing demonstrating a  moderate secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) and a mild coarctation. An atrial septal defect is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that divides the upper chambers of the heart (atria). A hole can vary in size and may close on its own or may require surgery. If one of these openings does not close, a hole is left, and it is called an atrial septal defect. The hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs and over time, it may cause damage to the blood vessels in the lungs. Damage to the blood vessels in the lungs may cause problems in adulthood, such as high blood pressure in the lungs and heart failure. Other problems may include abnormal heartbeat, and increased risk of stroke.
     
     
    MRI obtained for evaluation of distal arch and pulmonary veins due to findings of pulmonary overcirculation out of proportion to typical ASD pathophysiology.
     
    The MRI provided a complete anatomic overview and quantified the right sided enlargement from the 2:1 shunt through the ASD.  Due to saturation band nulling of blood returning through the right sided pulmonary veins, there was excellent definition of the ASD due to the "dark" blood mixing with the "bright" blood and outlining the borders of the ASD which transfers to the model very well. Please keep in mind, that the model represents a heart in end-systole rather than diastole.

    The available model has been validated to demonstrate the case’s pathologic features on a Z450 3D printer, (3DSystems, Circle Rock Hill, South Carolina)(or other printer as appropriate).  While the mask applied to the original DICOM images accurately represents the anatomic features, some anatomic detail may be lost due to thin walled structures or inadequate supporting architecture; while other anatomic detail may be added due to similar limitations resulting in bleeding of modeling materials into small negative spaces. However, intracardiac structures, relationships, and pathologic features represent anatomic findings to scale and in high detail.
