  1. I came across how to use the "Create Pivot" tool in Meshmixer to more precisely place a "Plane Cut," but it doesn't always seem to place the pivot where I want it. My heads are in FH with nasion at x = 0 and I want to make cuts at precise distances from this point or at other known points from the origin (I have nasion at x = 0, left and right porion at y = 0 and z = 0). When I use the default pivot placement, it sometimes places it at the origin, which is perfect because I can use that or use the "Transform" tool to shift the pivot a specific distance. Anyways, even with the same settings, the pivot is not always placed at the origin, so I'm not getting a cut at 0 every single time. Has anybody played with this or have a better way of getting cuts at a precise location? Meshlab has a "Compute Planar Section" which lets me take a cut at say, x = 0, but then I have to extrude it to get a printable layer.

  3. Hi Peter, What are you using to combine multiple models? I have used Fiji to combine multiple STLs into one U3D that will expand into a model tree in Acrobat Pro, but it is very slow. Meshlab will create a U3D, but not from multiple models and not for large models. Thanks, Terrie
  4. I believe .mxp is a 3-matic project file rather than a model file. I have 3Matic and can probably open it for you if it's something you can email.

  6. Thank you for your comment! I have attached a gallery of screenshots showing how I use the Ambient Occlusion filter in Meshlab to hollow heads. It applies shading to your model and allows you to easily select internal surfaces to delete. I hope it helps! Terrie
  7. This method can be used to hollow a skin or bone model that contains internal surfaces connected to external surfaces.

    Import an STL. Go to Filters --> Color Creation and Processing --> Ambient Occlusion per Vertex. When the box opens up, check "GPU Acceleration" and click Apply. Click close after processing is complete.

  10. Hi James, If you export each of the separate STL models, you can combine them in Meshlab. Import both models into Meshlab, then go to Filters --> Mesh Layer --> Flatten Visible Layers. This will merge the 2 STL models into one that you can then export. I don't have experience printing with a dual extruder, so I can't help with how to specify the separate color, but I think Cura can handle that. Terrie
  11. Hi Rudy, There is a "Crop Volume" plugin in 3D Slicer that allows you to designate an ROI in the Volume Rendering tool, and then crop the CT volume to a subvolume which you can then use for rendering to 3D. I describe how to use it in my blog post here:

  14. Thanks so much for the information! I suppose there's still much research to be done to explore the behavior/applicability of 3D printed bone models in these types of studies.
  15. Thank you for the link and comments mplishka and mikefazz. With the ability to CT scan cadaver material, I was thinking it would be interesting to create physical replicates of an individual's geometry, potentially with 3D printing if there were an appropriate material that would fracture like bone. The studies would build datasets for forensic interpretation. FEA might be the way to go for now. I like the idea of printing out a bone in different colors. Mikefazz, did you use a filament-based printer for the photo you posted?
  16. I was wondering if anybody has found a 3D printing material that works well for fracture studies. I am aware of Sawbones, but would like to explore the possibility of using CT scans to generate 3D printed bones of different size/age/sex for fracture/trauma studies. Thanks! Terrie
