The following is an example of what can be done starting from the data of a skull scan. After the two-dimensional study of the scans you can devote yourself to something that seems to me of extraordinary usefulness in our specialty. In this specific case I dedicated myself to the microsegmentation of the facial nerve inside his bony canal, highlighting the three-dimensional relationships between the nerve and the structures it meets from the internal auditory canal to the stylomastoid foramen. It was so that I really understood the exact position of the nerve between the lateral semicircular canal and the oval window in the tympanic tract, the exact position of the 2 knees, and overall the relationship between the middle ear, labyrinth, facial nerve, carotid artery internal, jugular vein, auditory eustachian tube. This model can be used as a virtual personal ear trainer, or it can be 3Dprinted whole, or in its main constituents. Whole print maintains the characteristic pneumatic cellularity of the mastoid and the compactness of the otic capsule and can therefore be used as a in house ear surgery training model. It is also possible to separate and print the labyrinth and other components of the petrous part of the temporal bone separately. P.S. please contact for more technical specification Dr. Nicola Di Giuseppe

This is a well-defined file of the mandible with teeth. The third molars are in deep inclusion and we also have a supernumerary tooth. I was also able to segment and to separate the inferior alveolar nerves in the mandibular canal up to the mental foramen. The mesh is generated with two surface rendering, one for the bone of the mandible and one for the teeth. I think this is a good idea for Anatomical study of the alveolar nerves and the relation of the nerve with the apex of the third molar. For surgical training you can try the cuts of the Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy, any endodontic treatments or all your imagination let you do. I Hope you Enjoy. Nicola

This file is a micro segmentation of bony labyrinth taken from a CT scan. I paid particular attention to the vestibule bone with its 2 windows, the cochlea and the semicircular canals. To exhibit all bony labyrinth I eliminated the middle ear structures, but I kept the hammer, the incus and the facial nerve canal. you can observe the course of the facial nerve canal in its three portions with two knees and with his natural dehiscences. I also left in place the internal auditory canal and the internal auditory meatus where are visible the facial cochlear and vestibular nerves openings with the bony eminences that separate them (Bill's Bar, Crista falciformis). You can open the file with any program for managing files .stl and navigate in three dimensions between or within the bony structures (I do with the program called Preview in Mac) to facilitate the study of these complex structures. I added screenshots which shows the most important structures. The file is already ready to be printed and does not need cleaning. The dimensions are X: 21.3 mm, Y: 16.4 mm, Z: 16.4 mm (2x1.6x1.6 cm). You can easily increase the size if you want to print a solid model of the inner ear P.S. I spent many hours to this work and would like to have your opinions and suggestions on where to improve. I provide for those who want the file at different stages of processing Nicola Di Giuseppe

  6. Thank You Mike. I finally Destroyed my Model performing my First 3DMed-Lab at Home. It Was Amazinggggg. The canal wall down mastoidectomy was very similar to those made of real bone in Real-lab and feedback of the drill very realistic. I will Post Pics soon

This is a .stl file of a left temporal bone ready for 3d printing. I have segmented a CT scan paying attention to all the important bony structures of the ear. In the .stl screenshots you can see the mastoid, malleus, incus, the bony canal of the facial nerve, the stylomastoid foramen Etc. I do this for my training and the idea is to perform a mastoidectomy just in my desktop i have printed my personal 3d plaster model (you can see in the screenshots) but i haven't the courage to destroy it whit the drill..... I hope that my work can be of help to anyone who wants to try to drill a faithful model of temporal bone at home or simply want to study the anatomy in a versatile 3d .stl Model Good Job Nicola Di Giuseppe M.D.

  9. Hi to all I'm Nicola ENT surgeon From Italy I need help for a way to print a well defined nasoethmoidal and sphenoidal and cribriform plate. I'm trying whit osirix but for to export in .stl file i can only define parts of the skull from the sagittal or from the coronal or from the axial acquisitions and reconstruct in surface rendering. i wasn't half skull in the coronal or in the axial scan but i need only a focus in the bilateral OrbitoNasoEthmoidoSphenoid region whitout the frontal the maxillar mandibular bones.
