About This File

This anatomically accurate 3D printable sphenoid bone was created by Dr. Marco Vettorello, who has graciously given permission to share it here. The sphenoid bone forms the base of the skull. It houses the sella turcica, which protects the pituitary gland and the sphenoid air cells which are part of the paranasal sinus system. The file is in STL format and compressed with ZIP.

This file is also available here.

There are some manifold problems with the model and there is at least one disconnected (floating) solid, so you should fix it with Meshlab or similar before you print it. It is not oriented correctly to print with the most adhesion the the build plate, and the best orientation is not a simple 90° rotation.

File printed great.  I recommend using meshmixer's support generation to get tree supports, as most freely available slicers will put way too much support to yield a cleanly finished print.

This is an excellent model!  I am a high school anatomy teacher in Missouri and I used this stl file to print the sphenoid bone on a flashforge inventor II.  It turned out excellent!  It appears that the vomer bone is also attached to the sphenoid in this model, but it is good to be able to show students that joint as well (and it doubles as a stand)  :)
