About This File

This skull of an adult male Cape leopard was found in the mountains of the Western Cape province of South Africa and scanned by high resolution CT. These leopard, unlike their cousins further north, are slighter and adapted to a harsher climate with cold wet winters and hot dry summers. They are not uncommon in these mountains and regularly move in close proximity to humans, but like other leopards, remain elusive apart from their spoor, scats and camera trap pictures. The skull itself has bilateral tooth puncture holes, suggesting that this leopard probably died after being injured in a fight with another cat.
