About This File

The thigh is the upper segment of the lower limb extending from the pelvis down to the knee joint. It contains the longest bone in the body which is the femur with multiple muscles, vascular structure and nerves.

 

This 3D model represents a case of Leiomyosarcoma implicating the right medial aspect of the thigh of a 78 years old female. The patient represented with no significant lung metastasis and was treated by surgical excision follower by radiotherapy.
A cross sectional CT image is attached showing the lesion in axial, coronal and sagittal planes.
 
Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are extremely rare malignant neoplasms that originate from smooth muscle cells and may be considered the malignant counterpart of a leiomyoma. They are classified as a soft tissue tumour and account for ~8% of malignant soft tissue tumours.
 
Leiomyosarcomas can potentially occur anywhere where there is smooth muscle. Commonly described sites include: uterus, retroperitoneum, stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver and other sites.
