3D Printable Human Brain Model, STL format, from MRI

This Brain model was created from a high resolution MRI scan. The model includes the cerebrum. The cerebellum and brain stem are not depicted. The model has been made hollow, with 4 mm wall thickness to save on material when 3D printing. The model is full-size. It has been successfully printed at full size on an Ultimaker 3 Extended printer, and at 95% size on a Formlabs Form 2 printer.

3D Printing Brain Model with Stroke: STL Files Available for Download

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. In 2010, worldwide prevalence of stroke was 33 million, with 16.9 million people having a first stroke. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, and brain cells die.

This 3D printable model of stroke contains three STL files for bioprinting. One STL file is for printing the cerebral arteries. There is a skull STL file and another file for printing the filling inside the skull which provides support for placing the vasculature in the proper position within the model. The files have been zipped to reduce file size. You will need to unzip the files once you have downloaded them. These files are distributed under the Creative Commons license Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs. Please respect the terms of the licensing agreement.

The models are provided for distribution on embodi3D.com with the permission of the creators Dr. Beth Ripley and Dr. Tatiana. These models are part of the Top 10 Killers 3D printable disease library. James Weaver and Ahmed Hosny also contributed to the project. We thank everyone involved for their contributions to embodi3d.com and their advocacy for better health and education through 3D printing.

    Adult Male Brain from MRI

This is an 55 year old adult male brain (mine), obtained from an MRI scan.
I've printed successfully with my Prusa MK2 printer, using PETG and Simplify3D with custom supports to generate the g-code. A full size print took roughly 20 hrs. A 60% of full size about 8 hours.

    Adult Male Brain Ventricular system

Adult male brain ventricle system.  I've printed this successfully on a Prusa MK2 printed, using PETG, and Simplify3D with custom supports to generate the g-code.  Print lateral ventricles down as shown.  This is delicate, removing the supports should be done with care, Frontal (anterior) horn, Temporal (inferior) horn,
Occipital (posterior) horn, Cerebral aqueduct (of Sylvius), 4th ventricle, Left interventricular
foramen (of Monro), Right lateral ventricle, 3rd ventricle, Supra-optic recess, Interthalamic adhesion,
Infundibular recess, Pineal recess, Suprapineal recess

    Telencephalon, Pyramidal Neuron

After one week of practicing with dr. Mike's tutorials, I was able to create 3D model of pyramidal neuron from 10gb CLSM (confocal laser scanning microscopy) Tiff slide. I almost burned my video card, but in the end I done it
First I used Fiji to convert .tiff slide to binary (Process/Binary/Make Binary). Then I used Dilate function to reduce the size (Process/Binary/Dilate) and I cropped one of the most promising neurons (Image/Crop). I saved my stack as a .tiff and I used 3D Slicer to create volume (Volume Rendering), to convert it to label map and to export it as .stl. Finally I used Meshmixer to remove the artifacts, to decrease my triangle budget and to add a mild smooth effect. The result is here. I hope my experience will help you in your future projects. I'll create video tutorial as soon as I can.

    • You can go to Analysis--> Inspector and it will drop pins indicating the holes and you can click them to fill in. Since your edges are highlighted blue, Meshmixer knows those edges outline holes.
    • Hello. Making skeleton model from full body CT is easy. But is it possible to create muscle and inner organs layers? I don't need too much details on them, general forms. Example of such CT is this:  I think that hardest will be the intestines area. Maybe even impossible. You can't really see for example kidneys or pancreas. What instruments can you advice? Can full body CT have greater details? Maybe it's not really possible to do from full body CT and better have CTs of each zone? I want to hear professional opinion on this project.
    • I'm an aerospace engineer with multiple patents in various fields. I am an expert in design and mechanical engineering. I myself have had a collapsed sinus wall as well as four surgeries. I am working to design my own sinus stent/dilator/catheter/implant for the goal of having a more normal lifestyle. I hope to use this forum to answer any questions I may have when designing my implant. There are no guarantees it will solve the issue of chronic sinusitis.  The STL 3D model will shed some light into what problems may exist. Even the best doctors must evaluate a triple view of CT scans and make sense of navigation. Models help with this complexity. I am working with my ENT specialist. He is a great surgeon and wants to take things slow seeing as how I've had four procedures now. I must endure this process and learn as much as I can. Upon completion of my own project, I am open to helping anyone in the field of medicine advance this process and technology in order to help others. Life is too short to be miserable every day. Anyone who has experience with this area, please reply and give input. I'm open to any and all opinions and experiences. Added value to the project is also helpful. Thank you. Sincerely, AJP California
    • Hi, mi name is Javi and i´m vet student of Spain. I´m helping surgeon of our veterinary hospital, and we are printing 3d models of dog´s bones that we operate there. Some bones don´t grow up correctly and the surgery consist on cutting a wedge to line up. I want to design a 3d guide starting from the original bone with holes where the saw enter to cut the bone in the perfect angle, or for leveling the tibial plate of a CTWO (Tibial Wedge Osteotomy). Someone can help me? i paste a photo of what i want to do. I use 3d Slicer to generate the 3d model of the bone from a CT and Meshmixer to edit the bone and printer is a creality ender 3 pro, i can print the bone, what i don´t now is how to make the guide.  Thank to everybody.
    • I tried to converted my NRRD maxillofacial scan file to a 3d STL file and the results were completely distorted as sheen in pictures below settings used - Detailed bone, 300 (default) threshold, High quality   can you please suggest what are the steps I can take to prevent such distortions' ?
